TVB Puts Bus Hostage Crisis in New Drama

The Manila Bus Hostage Crisis

Although it's been more than half of a year since the Manila Bus Hostage Crisis happened, but it's still a pain to most Hong Kong residents.

A dismissed Philippine National Police Officer hijacked a Hong Kong tour bus and took the Hong Kong tourists as hostages in an attempt to resume his previous position as a police officer. Eight hostages were dead in the end, and some of the other hostages are now facing long term injuries from the incident.

TVB's new drama "Flying Tigers"/"Special Duties Unit" (tentative name) starring Joe Ma and Jessica Hsuan was filming a bus hostage scene yesterday, very similar to the Manila hostage crisis. The scene is about Kenneth Ma, who plays the villain, takes over a tour bus and demands the police to release his wife (JJ Jia). He goes crazy when he knows his injured wife dies.

The scene is similar to the hostage crisis happened in Manila, Philippines last year. Not only it's also a bus hostage crisis, it's also similar in which the hostage taker is emotion-driven by the fact his close family member is held by the police force.

Actors filming the scene was not so willing to film this scene. Jessica Hsuan is worried this part would rub salt into the wound of victims from the real hostage crisis. Kenneth Ma, whose role resembles the real hostage taker, expressed he has no control and can only follow the script.

As one of the hostages in the scene, Christine Kuo believes the screenwriter just wants to show the message the bad can't win the good and didn't purposely try to relate it to the unfortunate incident. Her boyfriend in the drama Oscar Leung thinks similar stories have been seen in other movies; it's just now everyone is being more sensitive to it.

Kenneth Ma at Grace Under Fire Promotional event

Kenneth Ma attended a promotional event for Grace Under Fire on March 24th at Causeway Bay World Trade Center. Also attending the event were his fellow co-stars, which includes John Chiang, Bosco Wong, Liu Xuan, Fala Chen, Oscar Leung, Edwin Siu, and Matthew Ko. At the event the artists posed for pictures and teamed up to play games as crowds of audiences stand to watch!

It was recently rumored that a TVB Siu Sang nicknamed Mr. Y, is infected with AIDS and when shooting a kiss scene, a female artist refused to do it because she was afraid of getting infected. Kenneth expresses that he has not heard of the Mr. Y before, he said: "Too bad the description doesn't sound like me, otherwise I'll just admit it, get some news and can get some promotion for the series." Kenneth boasted his good reputation, no one has refused to kiss him. Kenneth was asked if he'll follow Raymond Lam and go for a northern China beauty? He said: "Shooting up north, I really hope to do, but my Mandarin is not good, so it's better if I stick with Hong Kong girls. Love isn't divided into nationality though, the most important is communication." Reporters said Ron Ng's Mandarin is also not good, but he still has rumors Kenneth laughed: "His Mandarin improved a lot now!"

Has Confidence in Playing a Villain: Kenneth Ma Hopes to Be Hated by All

Kenneth Ma, who has been in the industry for a number of years, has mostly played simple and honest youths; however, in "Grace Under Fire", he can finally try something new. This time, he plays Yau Sam Sui, who goes from being a good person to a villain; there is not only anticipation, but also the hope to be so villainous so as to get yelled at by others. After working with Kaki Leung, they have high praises for each other; however, both insist in not falling for each other in real life. Kenneth frankly said that he would only fall for the character, not his partner.

The other day Kenneth and Kaki were at Tseung Kwan O TVB City promoting TVB series "Grace Under Fire". Kenneth frankly said that he greatly anticipates this series, as his character Yau Sam Sui is different from his previous simple and honest roles. He said, "This time is my first time playing a villain. The storyline says that he suffers a lot of unjust treatment, so he goes to the other side. I greatly anticipate the feeling of slowly going from a good person to a villain. The transformation is quite big".

Kenneth said, "However, when filming, there were some scenes that were too violent and too bloody that they cannot be aired. I also want to see what got edited out. Obviously, I don't want too much to be edited out. The best would be to air it in its original version; however, some directors praised me for doing quite well, so I have a quite a bit of confidence for the villain scenes. The best would be to be so villainous so as to get yelled at by others when [I] go out; then it will be regarded as a success".

Kenneth again frankly said that if he were a successful villain, he would not rule out heading in the villain direction. He said, "After filming this series, I also have some series afterward that are both good and evil, so if the response is good, hope to be able to develop in the direction of villainous roles. In this area, the room for development is quite big...hope to be able to give everyone a new feeling--actually, Kenneth Ma is not that stupid".

Takes Care of Artistes in the Same Series

Kaki Leung, who plays Kenneth Ma's wife in the series this time, has high praises for him. Kaki said, "Our entire collaboration process was very easeful. Kenneth also takes care of his partners. Would also help me think, and would bring me into the scene. Actually, always wanted to have this opportunity to collaborate with him". When asked if she would she fall for Kenneth, Kaki laughingly said, "Fall for him? Almost! However, it's just in the series". Kenneth, who was on the side, laughingly said, "Then I failed. Almost for everyone".

Kenneth Ma at Grace Under Fire Promotional event

Kenneth Ma and the cast of Grace Under Fire attended an event promoting their upcoming series. Kenneth Ma, who usually plays the nice guy, is playing a villain in this series. His character, Yau Sam-shui (游三水), is the older adopted brother of Kwai-lan (played by retired Mainland Chinese Olympic gold-medal gymnast Liu Xuan). Like Kwai-lan, he greatly admires Wong Fei-hung and hopes to one day become his disciple. Sam-shui, initially naive and kind, grows to become someone who is calculative and cruel after experiencing many pain and unfair setbacks. Sam-shui's unrequited love for Kwai-lan's best friend, Fa, also contributes to Sam-shui's insanity as Fa is in love with Ching-lung (played by Bosco Wong) instead of him. Kenneth expresses that he is impressed with Sam-shui's solid and dimensional characterisation, and praises the role to be a man "with flesh and blood."
