Kenneth Ma pushed to become 'Big Brother' at TVB
TVB wouldn't let him go, no hope for Kenneth Ma to earn Chinese dollar, forced to be 'big brother' at TVB
When counting the time Kenneth Ma spent in the entertainment industry, it's not considered very long, but it's also far from being short, Kenneth has already been filming TVB dramas for 12 years now. Seeing many of TVB's big brothers and sisters migrating to mainland to film series and make money, no doubt Kenneth is envious, but he says with a smile "I won't be greedy, I'm already happy with the "sweets" (opportunities) I'm getting now."
Recently TVB has been loosing many of its lead actors and actresses. Most of those who has served TVB for 10 or more years have migrated to mainland in search of opportunities, or at least reduce their workload at TVB to film more mainland dramas, these include Bowie Lam, Kevin Cheng, Charmaine Sheh, Myolie Wu, Sammul Chan, Joe Ma, etc. Salaries are a few times higher when filming in mainland, making many envious.
Over the past few, Kenneth Ma has been offered to take part in 3 or 4 mainland series. For example, while filming Prominent Family, Kenneth was asked to participate in a mainland drama; unfortunately, TVB refused it with the reason "conflict of schedule". As a result, Kenneth watch helplessly as fortune passed him by. Each year, Kenneth has to film 3-4 dramas for TVB, leaving him no chance to film dramas outside.
Kenneth responds "I understand that the company's production cannot be stopped. In addition, many actors and actresses has left recently, leaving many opportunities open at TVB. The company is in need of staff. I'll just stand in line for now, hoping I won't be left aside. Everyone will have their turn to make real money. I won't be greedy, as long as TVB gives me some "sweets" (perks), I'll be happy. I just want to make more money, buy a bigger place so that my family can live more comfortably."
After losing many of its staff, TVB resorts to promoting the next generation of actors/actresses. Having Kenneth Ma and Tavia Yeung leading a group of new comers in "The Hippocratic Crush", Kenneth suddenly transforms into "Big Brother". Kenneth credits the producer (Poon Ka Dak) for giving good opportunities to newcomers, each character in the series is noteworthy. Not only is the lead storyline interesting, the side stories are also very appealing. "Although newcomers has more NGs while filming, each one of them puts in a lot of effort. I don't feel that the newcomers slow down the filming process; on the contrary, seeing how hard they work, I won't dare to be lazy. They reignite the passion I had when I first started acting."
Gratitude towards healthcare professionals
Kenneth Ma expresses that he has gained deep understanding of those in the medical field after shooting "The Hippocratic Crush". Not only do they work long hours, but they are very stressed when it comes to rescuing people's lives. He claims he's not good in school, but he just hopes to send a positive message through this series and impact more of the younger generation to become doctors. In the series, his role 'Cheung Yat Kin' was responsible for a car accident that resulted in his brother's paralyzed legs. Yat Kin regretted it all along. Since youth Yat Kin wanted to be a doctor and earn enough money to support his brother to study aboard. He hopes for medical advances and one day his brother can walk again. Kenneth expressed he really liked The Hippocratic Crush's script. It's not just about love and solving cases, but it also highlights the difficulty and constraints doctors have via the medical cases. He believes Yat Kin may appear very strong on the outside, but on the inside he's flawed. He's a doctor, not God. When he encounter troubles, he'll fall down to rock bottom in life and eventually Yue Jai (Tavia) helps him get back up. Kenneth said this series is very realistic, and the filming was very serious. In addition, two advisory doctors provided assistance throughout filming. There are many neuro and cardiac surgery scenes in the series, whether it's the way we hold the medical instrument, each step of the surgery, and the atmosphere in the operation room, everything is as accurate as possible. We put in a lot of time and effort in every scene, so the results are very realistic.
Kenneth also greatly praises that Tavia is fantastic, she is professional and serious: "She has a deep understanding of the script. When we were filming, all of the suggestions she gave were useful. The only thing that displeases me is that Ah Yi (Tavia) just has rumors with Him Law..." He continues: "Ah Yi doesn't have rumors with me...rumors is the way to gain more money earning opportunities as a couple team, there's no benefit for me! In order to move from a small home to a bigger one, I have to work hard and earn more!"
Only admit to dating Nancy Wu
Throughout the years, Kenneth worked hard on his career and put his love life aside. Although he had rumors with Margie Tsang, Nancy Wu, Sharon Chan, Kate Tsui, and Selena Li, he's only admitted to developing a relationship with Nancy, but at the end broke up due to incompatible personalities. When speaking of Margie, he says "We're very comfortable when seeing each other, we laugh a lot, but we're just friends." He feels that in a way, he is like Cheung Yat Kin. In the series Yat Kin has to concentrate on making money to send his brother to study abroad, and puts his love life aside. In real life, Kenneth also wants his family to live more comfortably. He has been working tirelessly to make money these past few years. Unfortunately, real estate has been appreciating continuously, thus he cannot realize his dream yet.
Giving it his all during his emotional breakdown scene
Kenneth encourages the audience to watch his emotional breakdown scene in "The Hippocratic Crush". It talks about when his brother's head was severely injured by a falling object and his character has to personally perform emergency intervention hoping to save his brother's life. Sadly, his brother didn't make it in the end. Witnessing his beloved one leave this world, Cheung Yat Kin fell to rock bottom, his personality took a drastic change, and entered depression. Luckily, he was comforted by Tavia's character. Kenneth reveals that it was an unforgettable experience for him when filming this emotional breakdown scene. Initially, the first shot was already acceptable, but the director wanted him to put out a little more. Tavia and the director took turns sharing their own tragic experiences with him, bringing his emotion to the lowest point, hence allowing him to utilize his full potential when shooting the scene. At the end, the scene was shot three times, not only was the director satisfied with the results, even Kenneth himself was pleased with his performance.
